Before moving south into Maryland I had never encountered the tulip poplar tree. Where I grew up poplars are softwood, fast growing trees, more like an aspen. The southern tulip poplar is a large hardwood, grand and long-living like an oak, and they drop these extraordinary green and orange blossoms in the spring!
